• Introduction to Food Composition

Have you ever considered what is in the food you eat and what your favourite dishes are made of?

We will take you on a journey to rediscover food!

You will get to know your food on a different level, learn about food composition, including the six major classes of nutrients and the different ways that these can be categorised. You will be able to undertake simple nutrient calculations and have an appreciation of how the balance of food selected over time can make an important difference to health. To sum up, 'we are what we eat!'

In this session, you will explore

    • factors which influence food choices
    • what food consists of (nutrient and non-nutrient components)
    • six classes of nutrients and ways of categorising them
    • how to measure energy from food and energy density
    • nutrition-based calculations
The interactive activity below contains short videos , comprehension questions for self-check and vocabulary building exercises .
We know, subject-specific vocabulary can be quite challenging.
Academic vocabulary building is essential for your future studies in the program. It is a process that takes time and effort. The words you will work through are used by your lecturer in the course, so studying them will help you greatly.
Work through the interactive book and complete the tasks. When you watch the videos, don't forget to take notes !
Effective notes can save you lots of time when it comes to revision. Revision is an essential part of learning to strengthen your memory and connect new knowledge with existing one.

Completion of this interactive activity will help you be an active participant in the live workshop. Bring your notes to class, they may be really helpful!
