The course will cover a range of topics on
Nutrition, including food composition, nutrient reference values (NRVs), healthy eating guidelines &
food group systems, functions of principal nutrients and functional
foods, food labelling
and introduction to nutrition research.
You will engage with the online content provided to you on the course page and complete online activities. Each of those activities will help you develop deeper understanding of the topic and support your learning. There are also some vocabulary building activities that aim to support development of your English language skills. Completion of these activities will assist you a lot in your studies in this course and your other course in the program.
In the live sessions with your lecturers you will discuss and apply what you have learned from the online recorded videos and additional materials, so it is very important that you come to class prepared. In class you are expected to take part in and contribute to small group and whole class discussions actively. Your participation and preparation will be closely monitored and assessed by your class teachers.
Your assessment tasks will require explanation, discussion and application of theoretical knowledge you gain in the course. Get your critical thinking and analytical skills sharpened to tackle the assessment questions. You should also be well-organised to follow the assignment schedule - assessments in this course are spread across the whole semester. Check Assessment Summary and Assessment Details tabs to plan your workload around the given due dates.
In each module of the course you will engage with several activities. Each activity will help you understand the content. Please read the information below explaining why certain tasks are important for your learning.
Before you watch tasks are important as they help you build your English vocabulary. Many of the words in these activities are repeatedly mentioned in the course. This is why it is important to learn them. A good strategy to learn each word is to come back to their definitions when you hear the words used in a lecture. If you have forgotten what the word means, return to the section as many times as you need.
Topic Videos provide you with an input on the course concepts. Some information in those videos may be familiar to you from your past studies. This will help you build your new knowledge throughout the course. It is important that when you are watching the video, you take notes. Note-taking helps you save time when you review the topics later in the semester. Ideally, you should watch each video twice to make boost your comprehension of the topic.
Quizzes are good for application of knowledge and self-check. They are one of the forms of revision as they help your brain to actively think about the questions. Answering questions also strengthens your memory and makes it easier to remember the information when it's needed at a later time.
Reflection and discussion are a very important part of your learning in this course. Discussion forums give you an opportunity to reflect on what you have learned. This helps to clarify your thinking about the course topics. It also gives you a chance to see other people's perspectives and opinions, which may confirm your own understanding or make you think in a new way. Also, the physical process of writing what you know about the topic helps you organise your ideas. Sometimes we think we know something, but without expressing it in some way, we may not.
There's also another great benefit: it helps you build your own community of learners and get to know your fellow students.
A Review quiz helps you consolidate your understanding and reveal any knowledge gaps you might have. This is important because if you don't have a good understanding of the content, it will make it harder to learn in the next section. Review is also important to strengthen your memory. This means that when new information is presented, your brain is able to quickly apply the memories to help process it.
Extension tasks include interactive activities for the module topic.
