This unit extends on the fundamentals of electrical power engineering acquired throughout the course. It emphasises the understanding of principles by applying them to practical situations. The aim is to give students an awareness of the skills needed for the design, implementation and construction of practical engineering systems. The unit involves two design investigation projects in electrical power engineering. The first will involve computational studies, design simulation and implementation. The second is a research project, involving literature surveys, practical investigations and a presentation on the content learned. Students will be presented with a wide variety of design aspects present within current power systems and prevalent in moving toward a renewable-focused power system.
