SDUW/RMIT-Mechanics and Materials 1-2018 Spring
Course category2018 Spring
This course is for SDUW students whose major is Mechanical Engineering. This course provides an introduction to structures and solid mechanics. Starting with Newton’s laws, the concepts of equilibrium and free body diagrams are established. These are extended to examine simple 2D and 3D structures. Internal loads of shear force, axial force and bending moments are examined, with introduction to tensile stress-strain curves of engineering materials and the concepts of elasticity and elastic limit. The flexural formula is introduced and the significance of the second moment of area and centroid is outlined. Torsional loading is examined and the differences between truss, frames and machines are highlighted.
