This unit focuses on the management of the Antarctic and Southern Ocean environment under what is called the Antarctic Treaty System. The unit begins with the exploration of Antarctica and the role of science in these early years. This has underpinned the development of Antarctic governance.

Several international treaties protect the Antarctic and the Southern Ocean by managing human activity, supporting scientific research, and protecting the environment. This unit will examine these treaties as well as the challenges they face protecting Antarctica into the future.
