The main aim of this course is to create a greater
understanding of our environment, society and economy, and to recognize the
impact we as individuals and construction professionals. Managing for Sustainability is designed to
enable students to critically reflect on how their own personal, disciplinary
professional practice as it relates to issues of sustainability.
Managing
for Sustainability requires students to explore the diverse ways of defining
sustainability using the dimensions of natural environment, society and culture
and the economy, often referred to as The Triple Bottom Line (TBL). In defining
sustainability the course requires students to reflect on their practice of
sustainability and subsequent professional practice. This includes recognition
of the different philosophical/disciplinary orientations and the emerging
consequences in practice. By using sustainability as a concept to explore
assumptions, biases and the limitations of existing approaches to practice, it
is hoped that you will be able to develop a critically reflexive approach to
your practice, perhaps with some sustainability content as well.
