Systems software and primarily the operating system of any machine mediate among application programs, utilities, and users, on the one hand, and the computer hardware on the other. To be an effective practitioner in the science requires an understanding of the concepts, structure, and mechanisms of systems software. This module presents a thorough discussion of the fundamentals of systems software design and relates these to contemporary design issues and to current commercial and research developments.
